Biennale Ad Diriyah

2021

Diriyah, Riyhad

Through the lookin-glass

Conceived through a collaboration between Mammafotogramma and Bricklab, this spatial installation is the product of shared reflections on framing views, layering, materiality, and visual perception;
themes that permeate both practices’ research.

Client: Saudi Art Council

Design: Mammafotogramma

Location: Diriyah, Riyhad

Project realized with: Bricklab

Visitors encounter the work through one of the large windows framing views of the wadi and the JAX industrial complex beyond.
Through a series of meticulously crafted optical lenses produced with artisans from Murano, the visitors’ gaze towards the exterior landscape is distorted to construct a narrative of imagination and future possibilities.

The work is calibrated to respond to the subject’s position vis-a-vis the window, provoking a multiplicity of readings and interpretations.
